Crispy Chili Honey Halloumi Bites

·

Let's make Crispy Chili Honey Halloumi Bites that are oven baked to crispy perfection, salty and cheesy on the inside, then tossed in a chili honey glaze. They are seriously ADDICTING!

What is Halloumi Cheese?

Halloumi is a Cypriot Cheese that is traditionally made from goat's and sheep's milk, or a mixture of the two. You may sometimes find it made with Cow's milk, as well. Funny enough, it's texture is often described as 'squeaky.' Think of Feta, except a little more chewy! It has a high melting point which makes it a phenomenal cheese to be fried or grilled, or used as a high protein meat alternative.

What are substitutes for Halloumi Cheese?

  • Feta... This is my go to alternative when I can't find Halloumi Cheese at my local grocers. They are both salty and cheesy.
  • Saganaki... This is another Greek styled cheese that may be hard to find, but worth a try!
  • Mozzarella... This would be a fun twist on classic mozzarella sticks!

How to make Crispy Halloumi Bites?

  1. Preheat oven to 450F. Line a large baking sheet pan with parchment paper.
  2. Set up your ‘battering’ station with three bowls. The first bowl will be your cheese sliced into cubes. The second bowl will be your eggs lightly beaten. The third bowl will be the crushed cornflakes, grated parmesan, sesame seeds, and sweet paprika.
  3. Toss the cubed cheese into the beaten eggs, then individually roll in the cornflake mixture until well-coated. Place on the prepared sheet pan. Repeat with remaining cheese cubes.
  4. Drizzle the olive oil over the cheese cubes. Bake for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  5. In the meantime, combine the honey and chili pepper flakes in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil then remove from the heat to cool.
  6. Place the crispy halloumi bites on a serving plate and drizzle with the chili honey glaze.

Can they be made in the Air Fryer?

Yes! I would replicate the same process of battering and drizzling with olive oil on the pan before air frying at 375F for 5-6 minutes on each side. Keep an eye out as they burn more quickly in an air fryer or need longer time to bake!

Can Crispy Halloumi Bites be made in advance?

Yes. Check out the storing and reheating recommendations below!

How to store and reheat leftover Crispy Halloumi Bites?

Store any leftovers in air tight containers in a single layer, using parchment paper to separate each stacked layer of cheese bites. Place in the fridge up to 4 days, or the freezer up to 2 months.

To reheat, place in a single layer on a pan lined with parchment paper and add to a preheat oven at 425F for 6-8 minutes on each side. If still not crispy, drizzle with a little bit of olive oil and continue cooking 3-5 minutes on each side until crispy again.
