Substitute for Calabrian Chili Pepper Sauce:
Harissa has a similar heat level to Calabrian Chili Paste so it's perfect substitute in this recipe! Harissa is a North African chili paste, traditionally made from roasted red peppers, chili peppers, garlic, and spices. It's not super spicy, but adds the perfect amount of heat and flavor!
Sriracha and Chli Crunch Oil are also great alternatives to be used in this recipe; however, they are much spicier so you may need to reduce the amount used to preferred heat level.
What is Calabrian Chili Peppers Sauce?
Calabrian chili paste is a spicy flavorful condiment that is spicy from a variety of small red chili peppers native to the southern Italian regions of Calabria (at the bottom of the "boot")! Its traditionally made from red chili peppers that are first dun dried then made into a paste with salt, vinegar, and olive oil.
TIPS for Making the Oven-Baked Crispiest Potatoes:
Roughen up the edges by slightly mashed with a fork or toss vigourosly in a bowl. The uneven edges will bake faster in the oven, allowing for a crispier exterior.
Olive oil and salt are your best friends! The salt helps to remove moisture, and the olive oil helps the potatoes to become crispy without burning. Both ingredients will also help the potatoes to stay crispy for longer!
Toss the potatoes halfway through baking so that all sides are crispy. Rotating the pan also does wonders if your oven doesn't circulate the heat very well and the back portions tend to cook faster.
How to Make Crispy Oven-Baked Potatoes:
Preheat oven to Roast 450F. Line a large baking pan with parchment paper.
Slice the potatoes in half, then add to hot water. Bring the water to a boil, the simmer for 10-15 minutes, until fork tender.
Drain the potatoes, then let steam dry for 5 minutes.
Roughly slice the potatoes into bite-sized pieces, then add to a large bowl and toss vigorously to roughen up the edges. This is what will create the crispy exterior.
(If adding the sauce) Add the Calabrian chili pepper, olive oil, lemon zest, and salt. Toss until well combined. Spread out evenly on the prepared baking pan.
(If keeping simple) Toss in 4 tablespoons olive oil and a generous pinch of salt.
Roast for 20-30 minutes, toss halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
Can you Make Crispy Potatoes in Advance?
Potatoes are best served same day; however, you can make them up to 3 days in advance. When ready to serve, lay out in a single layer on a parchment lined baking pan, drizzle lightly with olive oil, and roast at 400F for 8-12 minutes, until crispy again. You may want to flip them halfway through so they are crispy again on all sides.
