French Onion Grilled Cheese Sandwich

·

I simply can not put into words how delicious this grilled cheese is! Today, we’re making this French Onion-inspired Grilled Cheese that’s a beautiful combination of caramelized onions and mushrooms, fresh thyme, crunchy sourdough bread, and @organicvalley Raw Sharp Cheddar Slices for a complex buttery finish 🥖🧈

(Part 1) How to Make A French Onion Grilled Cheese:

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add 2 tablespoons butter.
  2. Once melted, add the thinly sliced onions. Season with the salt and black pepper.
  3. Cover and cook for 5-6 minutes, until softened.
  4. Stir the onions as you add ¼ cup water to de-glaze the pan. Reduce heat to medium and continue the cooking process until the onions are deeply caramelized, about 10-15 more minutes.

(Part 2) How to Make A French Onion Grilled Cheese:

  1. Increase heat to medium high heat again. Add the thinly sliced mushrooms, (optional) minced garlic, and chopped thyme. Saute until the mushrooms are tender.
  2. On a slice of sourdough bread, add 1-2 slices of the Raw Cheddar Cheese, followed by 1/3rd of the caramelized onions and mushrooms, another 1-2 slices of cheese, and sandwich with a second slice of bread. Repeat with remaining sandwiches.
  3. Butter the outside of the sandwiches, then place on a skillet over medium heat to cook 2-3 minutes, until golden on the outside and cheese is melted. Cover with a pan lid to help the cheese melt. Enjoy!

What is Organic Valley?

My family has been buying Organic Valley products since I was a wee little child - no jokes. They're that amazing! Organic Valley is an organic food brand and independent cooperative of organic farmers based in La Farge, Wisconsin, United States. Founded in 1988, Organic Valley is the nation’s largest farmer-owned organic cooperative and one of the world's largest organic consumer brands.

What makes Organic Valley different from other dairy brands?

The reason I use Organic Valley in my everyday cooking is because their dairy products add nutrition AND flavor to my dishes without antibiotics, synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides, nor GMOS. 🙌

I also love how Organic Valley works with small organic family farmers instead of being a single large dairy producer.

Fun Facts about Organic Valley's Raw Sharp Cheddar:

  • Award-Winning Raw Sharp Cheddar
  • Aged for at least six months to balance the cheese’s characteristic sharpness with a buttery finish.
  • Made with milk from pasture-raised cows
  • Always Organic!
  • Absolutely NO antibiotics, synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides or GMO anything.
  • Such SIMPLE ingredients: Organic Cultured Unpasteurized Milk, Salt, Vegetarian Enzyme

Can Caramelized Onions be Made in Advance?

Yes! In fact, I recommend keeping a large batch of these caramelized onions and mushrooms in tubberware in the fridge for 4-5 days. They're phenomenal to add onto steak crostini, inside grilled cheese sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, soups, and so much more!
