The Historic Farmhouse: Banner Elk, NC

·

This past week we kicked out summer in one of my favorite places ever in the heart of NC mountains chilling out as a family, tubing on the river, and of course shopping at the local farmers market. This was our second time staying at The Historic Farmhouse in Banner Elk, NC and it most definitely won't be our last! It dates back to 1885 and still has all the old cozy characteristics with new luxury appliances and I couldn’t be more obsessed!!

Take a step back in time with The Historic Farmhouse of Banner Elk dates back to 1885 when James Wilburn Whitehead would sit on the front porch looking out over hundreds of acres that he owned. From the time he built this home in 1885 until he died in 1924, he had the pleasure of working the large farm with his wife, Jennie, and their beloved children.

The Historic Farmhouse sits on a gravel road only 5 minutes outside downtown Banner Elk, leaving you with peaceful mornings and afternoons with the wildlife and without the noise of traffic.

You can walk across the street to gather farm fresh chicken eggs, feed the toast, say hi to Arnold the farm dog, and feed the horse in the barnyard.

In the backyard, you'll find a corn and potato garden to enjoy from during their season harvest, as well as a fire pit surrounding with sitting logs to take in nature during the evenings with s'mores.

As a foodie, you know the kitchen plays a huge role in VRBO rentals since the majority of our meals are made from scratch as a way to slow down and spend time together cooking.

Their large kitchen  has all the unique, warm characters and cozy charm of a historic farmhouse but fitted with newly updated, luxury appliances to help you enjoy your stay. And I couldn't be more obsessed!

They provide you with just about all your need to shop the local farmers market or grocery stores and cook away your favorites as you enjoy your weekend/week stay. And to stay everything was meticulously clean would be an understatement!

And while there are many things to be enjoyed about this Historic Farmhouse, the big front porch may just be our family's favorite! You can take in the beauty of the Elk River Valley and the surrounding mountains, just as James Wilburn Whitehead and his family did in their lifetimes.

There's several rocking chairs, as well as a swinging chair to relax and watch the barnyard and wildlife. And maybe, you might get the chance to see a private jet take off a few blocks across the way!

Things to do in Banner Elk / Boone:

  • Watauga Farmer's Market in Boone, NC

I recommend getting there closer to opening time to grab homemade sourdough baked goods and artisanal breads at Between The Trees Bakery tent that's close to the market's entrance.

  • Fly fishing

Check local regulations for catch and keep rules.

  • Tubing on the New River in Todd, NC

There are lots of places to rent tubes on that will always provide you will a lift from the ending point. However, if you have your own tubes, there are a few runs frequently used by outfitters in Todd and Boone that you can also use! Just make sure you have 2 cars to park at the stopping and starting points.

If you're visiting in the Fall Season, I highly recommend booking ahead of time for the Woolly Worm Festival that usually happens in mid-to-late October. My entire extended family used to go every year growing up, and it holds some of my favorite memories! The leaves have just changed into gorgeous shades of Autumn and all in life just seems right. It's the perfect Fall Break trip for the family!

Tubing Runs Frequently Used by Outfitters in Todd and Boone:

  • (Our favorite) Pine Run Road Bridge to Todd's General Store off of Railroad Grade Road
  • Castleford Road off of NC 194 to Green Valley Community Park of Big Hill Road
  • Green Valley Community Park off of Big Hill Road to Todd General Store off of Railroad Grade Road

Here are 2 out of 3 of the large and spacious rooms in The Historic Farmhouse!

We always go fly fishing when in the mountains, but this was our first time keeping (within NC regulations) a fish to cook!

Restaurant & Coffee Shop Recommendations in Banner Elk:

  • Little Wings Ice Cream (try the Sea Turtle flavor and thank me later)
  • Callista Flower Co. & Espresso Bar

If you know me, then you know how excited I was to be here in the early Summer when the wildflowers were in FULL blossom!!
